The endocannabinoid system and your skin
There are myriad factors that control skin homeostasis which keeps the skin’s ecosystem in harmony. The endocannabinoid system of our skin is emerging as a key player in this balance: controlling normal skin barrier function, growth and maturation of skin cells and skin inflammation.
With research suggesting the existence of the endocannabinoid system present in the skin, it’s easy to see how applying CBD topically to the skin could result in wellness-supporting benefits.
Dr. Tamas Biro, director of immunology at the University of Debrecen in Hungary, says that, because the endocannabinoid system is present in skin cells, the dermal layers in the skin are “indeed capable of producing endocannabinoids.” Biro also asserts that “most, if not all, skin functions are controlled by a certain extent by the local skin endocannabinoid system.”
Fascinatingly, in laboratory studies, CBD has been found to be an antioxidant, with even more antioxidant quality than Vitamin C (ascorbate) or Vitamin E (α-tocopherol)! As early as 1998, the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Cancer Institute began discovering that CBD works as an antioxidant and neuroprotectant.
